QUESTION: What are free radicals and where do they come from?

ANSWER: Think of your body as an engine that is burning fuel--in this case oxygen. This causes a chemical process called oxidation (waste) which are molecules that have a piece missing (an electron) and they run around your body looking for a replacement.

QUESTION: Why should I care about free radicals?

ANSWER: Because they attack our DNA, proteins and fats in order to steal electrons. When our cells are dominated by free radicals, they are weaker and subject to disease. As an example, think what would happen if the molecules of your skin and hair were allowed to be stripped of their electrons by free radicals? According to Dr. Mitra Ray, Ph.D. "you would be burnt toast."

QUESTION: Why does the body allow free radicals to accumulate and go looking to harm innocent molecules?

ANSWER: Because if you want energy the body must produce heat. Our focus should be on not over-producing free radicals because when the body is in balance free radicals can be generated to fight infection by consuming debris and foreign bodies. This happens because molecules can give up, or donate an electron and can themselves become a free radical (called an antioxidant radical). These are more stable and the body can flush them out over the period of one day.

QUESTION: Isn't there normally a balance between the production of free radicals and antioxidants?

ANSWER: Yes! But if we allow ourselves to get weak through the lack of good nutrition (fuel), the body can become overwhelmed by these free radicals. These unchecked free radicals can cause cellular changes leading to critical illness.

QUESTION: Where are antioxidants (the "Good Guys") found?

ANSWER: In foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and berries which are not only rich in antioxidants but they have phytochemicals (plant chemicals) that serve as tumor suppressors. In fact, researchers have found over 10,000 phytochemicals in one tomato and 7400 in one apple.

QUESTION: Can the body make antioxidants?

ANSWER: No! The body needs a wide variety of color such as orange (carotenes), purple (berries), red (lycopenes), etc. There are over 600 different pigments in plants; the more variety of color we get the better.
